Zonal Education Office, Matugama to re-landscape Dr. Kannagara's cemetery

A spokesman of the Zonal Education Office of Matugama says that the measures are underway to re-landscape the cemetery where the tomb of Dr. C.W..W. Kannangara situated.

The family cemetery situated in Lulbadduwa, Ittepana where the father of free education was cremated is now in a dilapidated condition. 

The students of Halwala C.W.W. Kannangara school clear the cemetery time to time but the place needs a re-landscaping.  

The Zonal Education Office of Matugama plans to implement a project of beautifying the place.

The tomb of the father of free education of Sri Lanka

The photos show the present situation of the family cemetery where the tomb of the father of free education of Sri Lanka Mr. C.W.W. Kannangara situated.

The cemetery is situated in Lulbadduwa, one and half kilometers away from Ittepana junction towards Aviththawa. The longest bridge of the Southern Expressway across Benthota River is also situated closer to the place.

Seminar for G.C.E. Advanced Level General English

The English Department of the Matugama Education Zone conducted a seminar on General English for the students that sit for the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination in August 2011.

Around 750 students of the schools of the Matugama Education Zone participated in the seminar. The Director - English Mr. P.B. Ranaweerage chaired the seminar and the In Service Assistants conducted the sessions on answering various types of questions of the examination paper.

Special English Course for bilingual teachers

English Department of Matugama Education Zone conducts a special six months English course for the bilingual teachers of the Matugama Education Zone.

The classes are held on every Thursday at St. Mary's College, Matugama. 

Around 25 teachers follow the course. The pictures show Mr. P.B. Ranaweerage, the Director - English conducting a class for teachers.

Singing workshop held in Matugama

English Department of the Matugama Education Zone organized a workshop at Ananda Sastralaya to practice the teachers of English for singing competitions.

The workshop was conducted by the Assistant Director of Education - Western Music, Colombo Zone Ms. Kanthi Priyadarshani.

More than 50 teachers participated in the workshop eagerly. They enjoyed the programme a lot, the teachers said.

Zonal English Language, Drama and Group Singing Competitions

Zonal English Language, Drama and Group Singing Competitions of Matugama Education Zone will be held at St. Mary's College, Matugama in the month of May.

Copy Writing, Prepared Speech, Recitation and Dictation competitions for the category one schools will be held on May 21 while the competitions of Creative Writing, Picture Description, Announcing, News Reading and Impromptu Speech will be held on May 28. The competitions are to start at 8.00 a.m. and the competitors are advised to be seated in relevant places in the school by that time.

All the competitions for the category two and three schools will be held on June 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Mary's College.

The Drama and Group Singing competitions for all categories of schools will be held at St. Mary' College, Matugama on July 09, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Programmes for bilingual teachers

English Department of Matugama Education Zone is continuing training bilingual teachers on teaching subjects in English medium. 

A training workshop was held at Zonal Language Training Center on April 29 and 30 with the participation of bilingual teachers of the Matugama Zone. The subject directors and the ISAs of English of Matugama Education Zone conducted the training sessions.  

The English Department will also start a special English course for the bilingual teachers to improve their language proficiency on May 05 at St. Mary's College, Matugama.

Awareness Workshop on Bilingual Education Programme held in Matugama

English Department of Zonal Education of Matugama conducted a special Awareness Workshop on Bilingual Education Programme at Ananda Sastralaya, Matugama om March 28, 2011.

The director of the Bilingual Education Unit  of the Ministry of Education Priyatha Nanayakkara and other officials conducted the workshop.

Around 50 teachers of the schools where bilingual education has been started and to be started participated in this workshop with enthusiasm.

Basic English Course for the Grade 9 slow learners held

Zonal Language Training Centre held the second programme of Basic English Course for the Grade 9 slow learners from March 21 to 25.

Students from Bellana Maha Viyalaya, Udawela Sri Piyarathana Maha Viyalaya, Girikola Siri Gunarathana Kanishta Vidyalaya and the Omatta kanishta Vidyala participated in the programme.

The students from Baduraliya Model Junior School took part in the first programme that was held from February 28 to March 07.
